CREEPY GIRL TRAVELS: TRAVEL WITH A TWIST OF CREEP

Black Coffin Tattoo: St. Paul

As I was getting coffee at Nina's in St. Paul, I saw a business card with a coffin on it. I immediately picked it up, and directed myself to the phone number listed on the front. I called the shop owner, Garrett Rautio, and scheduled a mini-tour the following day.

Garrett is an extremely friendly and approachable artist, the same goes for his team. He recently opened his shop this July, however he is not a rookie, this is a new adventure and departure from his old shop on Rice Street. You can tell Garrett infused a strong vision into his new environment.

I felt as though I knew Garrett just by walking down the studio's squeaky clean blue floors. It was as if he brought the man cave out of the basement and into the light: Star Wars, horror posters, an original Mark Riddick piece, oddity cabinets with pickled snakes and even a taxidermy bat, filled the walls. One of his staff members even joked that he was told to tame it down a little bit.

I asked Garrett what his ideal tattoo would be, he said he really loves graveyards and was always inspired by the creepy illustrations of Stephen Gammell, who is possibly one of my personal favorites as well. So if you are looking for some cemetery skin-lovin', call up Garrett, he would love to do some headstones!
